Fall 2001 - The Canadian Jewish News

L'Chaim Retirement Home's founder, Judy Cohen, is fulfilling her vision of an idea whose time has come. At this unique home for your family's independent older members, getting older really will mean getting better. At Sheppard and Maxwell, just west of Bathurst, L'Chaim is due to open in the second week of August. It's big enough to offer state-of-the-art features and services, yet small enough to devote personal attention to the individual - uniting safety and comfort with joie-de-vivre and quality of life.

Judy has given every detail her tender loving care, from the relaxing, cheerful decor, to the aquarium in the common area, to choosing an on-site hairdresser.

It's less a retirement home, kibbitzes Judy, than an exclusive club. Consider the perks, and you too may want to join. "One customer," she chuckles, said 'Never mind you, Ma - I'm moving in' ".

Judy has chosen L'Chaim's team for empathy and professional integrity. It includes Wendy Isenberg a highly skilled manager; Dr. Suzanna Gross, a family physician with an affinity for the elderly; a new, highly skilled program manager; skilled homemakers - and Judy's dog Sable, a sweet creature who loves people.

Within walking distance of banks, library and shopping, L'Chaim will keep its windows to the world wide open, with personal mail delivery, e-mail and internet access. Cable and private phones are available.

Activities include fitness, musical entertainment, games, outings, crafts, and Jewish programs such as Hebrew and Bible study. There will be Shabbos dinners, holy day observance, and three haymishe meals daily. There's a party room for seders and simchas, and a play area for visiting kids.

L'Chaim is healthful, environmentally friendly and smoke-free. Grab bars to reduce risk of falling, hand rails and non-slip flooring in the halls, and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are but a few of the safety features.

Look for an open house announcement in late July; but make your reservation soon, if you have logistical preferences (e.g. direction of exposure). Preferred units are going fast.

Judy is gratified that the community has embraced L'Chaim so readily. "I was always confident," she explains; "but until you move from the drawing board to the live stage, you never know."

L'Chaim is a member of the Ontario Residential Care Association.
