Fall 2001 - The Canadian Jewish News

There's no place like home, and that's why L'chaim Retirement Home has surpassed the expectations of its residents, management, and staff. It isn't an "alternative to home". It isn't a "replacement home". It isn't just a "nice place to visit." It's HOME.

This relaxed yet caring atmosphere didn't just materialize out of thin air. Years of careful planning went into creating the kind of environment and ambience that would allow residents to "be themselves" in the most uplifting surroundings possible. It starts with a front lobby and dining room that are filled with natural light. Bathed in sunshine on bright days, pleasant even on cloudy days, the dining area is the happy hub around which L'chaim revolves. Here, residents enjoy three delicious haymishe meals daily as well as afternoon tea, at which they're treated to cakes baked fresh daily by none other than founder Judy Cohen - a "hands-on" approach if ever there was one.

Judy's passion for enhancing the seniors experience knows no bounds. "This isn't just a job to me," she enthuses. "Nothing gives me more pleasure than making each and every resident feel wanted, comfortable, and happy. I never forgot how well my father was treated in his later years, and I always wanted to offer the same level of care to others. Now, I can."
One of the things residents and visitors alike love about L'chaim is its youthful spirit. One brief visit will convince you that in this respect, it's wonderfully different from all other retirement homes.

But don't let the intimate atmosphere fool you. L'chaim is state-of-the-art from top to bottom. No expense has been spared to ensure the comfort and safety of the residents. Each single room has a private bathroom, shower, air conditioning, and heating controls. Wheelchair-accessible rooms are also available. A major weekly cleaning and linen change are offered, and there's a laundry room on every floor for residents who wish to do their own washing and drying. And all this is available at extremely reasonable prices.

Equally impressive is the variety of activities, programs and services offered to residents. Under the supervision of Director Wendy Isenberg, with many years of devoted service in the retirement field, residents enjoy a wide range of outings and activities, such as bingo, trivia, and live music, to name but a few.

On-site access to health care professionals such as a general practitioner, physiotherapist and podiatrist ensures that residents' medical needs are addressed. A hairstylist visits once a week for those who wish to look as young as they feel.

If the more independent older members of your family wish to enjoy a true "golden age" in an active lifestyle environment, they'll find a home at L'chaim. All their needs will be attended to while they live life to the fullest, enjoying new experiences and forging new friendships.

Sometimes all it takes is a kind word or a caring gesture to turn a frown into a smile. That kind of enthusiasm and caring is ever-present at L'chaim, where every day is an occasion to celebrate.
